Michigan Supreme Court may consider rights of same-sex parents
Attorneys Dana Nessel and Nicole Childers will know in January whether the Michigan Supreme Court will hear a same-sex partnership child custody case involving their client, Renee Harmon. “In Michigan, over 10,000 children are being raised by same-sex partners,” explains Nessel, “and the Court’s decision on whether or not to hear this case will have a large impact on family law in this state and on this population in particular.”
Nessel and Childers say their client has now spent two Christmases without her children and it has now been over 16 months since she’s been allowed to see them. The attorneys believe that the Michigan Supreme Court should hear their case and ultimately give Ms. Harmon legal visitation rights.
