Anything but a ‘happy holiday’ can be had when families break up
A great article on how to handle the holidays after a family split can be found here.
In the article, Brenda Hann, a child and adolescent psychotherapist who has a private practice in Toronto, notes:
“The first time you’re having Christmas separately is generally the hardest time, she says, adding kids feel a lot of anxiety because they don’t know what’s going to happen next since everything changed so rapidly.”
The article goes on to note:
“The bottom line, Hann says, is regardless of how unpleasant divorce is, parents need to consider what’s in the best interest of their children, and over time, the stress during times like Christmas will lessen, as long as that’s what the parents work towards.”
Mediation can assist parents in developing custody and visitation agreements that are flexible and in the best interests of their children.
