Which parent will college freshman choose for holidays?
A divorced parent offers excellent insight into child custody, visitation and mediation in an article which can be found here.
About mediation the article notes:
“Her father and I had a mediated divorce. Instead of lawyers hammering out terms of settlement, mediation requires former partners to work together to reach agreement about division of financial assets and property. Far more important, parents must agree on arrangements for child custody. Divorcing spouses who choose mediation share a mutual goal: to not make things any harder on a child than they already are.”
“A boilerplate custody arrangement spelled out in the court order is something parents can fall back on. It’s a fair division of time, but one that verges on Draconian.”
The article further notes, with regard to visitation:
“The key to making things easier on one’s child after post-divorce is flexibility. If the hallmark of a custodial agreement has always been a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation, parents hope this will bear fruit later on.”
You and your spouse know your children better than any Judge could ever hope to. Mediation offers a way for parents to work out custody and visitation arrangements that truly work for their family.
