Can being apart save your relationship?
ForJenny and Phil Wright it was the slow descent into silence that precipitated their trial separation. Jenny and her husband had simply ceased to communicate, so she packed her bags and left to take a break from the stifling silence of her marriage.
The rift in Lisa and Stephen Briggs’ relationship, however, was caused by the bitter toxicity of their rows. It was these awful, escalating arguments – during which neither Lisa nor her husband listened to a word the other was saying – that drove her to leave the family home with their two children.
Both couples intended the break to be temporary; a “trial separation” that would, by giving each of them time for quiet reflection, mend the fissure in their damaged relationships.
The outcome for each couple, however, was different.
