Love and debt: Couples need to get together to map out their money plan

It’s the rare bride and groom that boast multimillion dollar wedding budgets like Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky. But with summer wedding season in full swing, many newlyweds find money is a huge topic, as much after the honeymoon as before.

Joining finances can be tricky. Money has long topped the list of topics couples fight about. The more often those fights occur, the more likely a marriage will end in divorce, a new study found.

Setting a budget is particularly important if you’ll be living together for the first time or you’ve yet to share expenses before, said Caroline Tiger, author of “The Newlywed’s Instruction Manual: Essential Information, Troubleshooting Tips and Advice for the First Year of Marriage.”
