How to Pick the Right Nursing Home

Making the decision to place a loved one into a nursing home can be a very stressful experience for all parties involved. The last thing you want is to find out that your mother or father has become the victim of elder abuse . What steps can you take to make sure that a nursing home can be entrusted to care for your aging loved ones?

Consumer Reports has been publishing a Nursing Home Guide that shows ratings of nursing homes in each state. Their Nursing Home Quality Monitor identifies nursing homes that are more likely to provide better quality and lower quality care based on certain criteria. The three main criteria studied included the following:

· Deficiencies cited in each nursing home’s three most recent state inspection surveys;

· Staffing levels for RNs, LPNs/LVNs, and nurse’s aides; and

· Quality indicators like the proportion of residents who were at high risk for developing pressure ulcers or had existing pressure ulcers, the proportion of residents who spent most of their time in bed, the proportion of residents who experienced a decline in their ability to move independently, the proportion of residents who were at low risk for incontinence but became incontinent, and the proportion of residents who declined in daily activities between the two most recent assessments by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services “CMS”.
