Social networking’s instant intimacy can ruin lives, experts warn

Irresponsible electronic messaging has ensnared many politicians and celebrities, most recently U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., but more average folks are finding their “e-evidence” coming back to haunt them.

Take couples duking it out over divorces or child custody. Divorce attorneys admit they increasingly are searching the Web for everything from flirtatious messages to videos and photographs that suggest infidelity or irresponsibility. Weiner has admitted sending inappropriate messages and photos to several women.

Carl Marcyan, with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, remembers a child custody case in which he represented the ex-wife. She was accused of not having high enough standards to raise their children, but the firm’s quick search of the Web found a YouTube video of her former spouse partying on a 60-foot yacht in the Bahamas with multiple women.
