One of the things I enjoy most about providing parent education is the new and exciting information I learn in the process. Such was the case a couple weeks ago when I was privileged to do a presentation for family law attorney William Reisdorf’s Dads and Moms Legal Group.

According to Mr. Reisdorf, and I certainly agree, one of the best kept secrets in Michigan Family Law is MCLA 722.27a, Michigan’s Parenting Time Statute. The importance of this statute is its powerfully worded accretion that, as shared parenting advocates have always understood, kids need a strong and healthy relationship with both fit parents. So to that end, parenting time should be in a frequency that promotes such a bond; “real time” in real elements of parenting. More specifically, the statute states, “… parenting time shall be granted to a parent in a frequency, duration and type reasonably calculated to promote a strong relationship between the child and the parent granted parenting time.” The statute further states children have a “right” to parenting time unless it is shown by clear and convincing evidence that it would endanger the child.
