Until debt do us part

It may seem calculating to talk to your financial planner before your partner when considering divorce, but advisers say that in these days of high debt and expensive lifestyles it may be wise.

“More and more people are planning their divorce before actually telling their partner,” says Olivia Maragna, of Aspire Retire Financial Services.

A family law specialist, Jane Koelmeyer, says that in relationship breakdowns, “it really is the case that forewarned is forearmed”.

“People need to get advice at the earliest point so they know both their rights and their obligations and they understand the implications of the decision they're contemplating,” says Koelmeyer, a Melbourne-based partner with law firm Lander & Rogers.
