Self-help legal center planned
The Michigan Supreme Court plans to develop a statewide legal self-help center for people representing themselves in divorce, foreclosure and other civil matters, Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly said Wednesday.
Kelly announced the initiative as part of her State of the Judiciary address before a joint session of the House and Senate that also included news that Michigan courts have become more efficient at processing cases.
Kelly has appointed a Solutions of Self-help task force to oversee development of a Web site and other resources.
“This will not always mean that people don’t get lawyers — it’s about creating a continuum of legal services depending on what people are facing,” said Lorraine Weber, Michigan Supreme Court director of access and fairness and a co-chairwoman of the task force.
