How to choose an attorney

(PLEASE NOTE: Rules about fees are state specific & the information in this article may not apply to your state)

The most common lawyer needs for people 25 to 35 are family law (marriage dissolution, child custody and child support), OWIs and criminal matters, and employment law or general advice for starting a business. But don’t just head for the phone book or Google when you’re in need of a professional.

Ask around.

“Go to friends and family first,” Brommel said. “Even if you don’t think you know a lawyer, chances are, you probably know someone who knows a lawyer.” Brommel suggests asking other professionals you interact with, such as your accountant, banker or financial planner. “This is an age group that is involved with YPC (Young Professionals Connection) and other young organizations, and a lot of times, there is an attorney in that group, and that’s a good place to start.” Pick a few attorneys who specialize in the area of your needs. A real estate lawyer isn’t going to be able to help as much in a divorce case.
