Divorce and death of the extended family leaves pensioners alone

In a report, the Centre for Social Justice says that the ageing population has led to a surge in the numbers who need help with basic care, with an additional 1.7 million pensioners likely to be dependant on others within two decades.

But a collapse in the traditional extended family, where the younger generation live close to elderly relatives and share the burden of caring for them, has resulted in fewer people willing and able to act as carers.

Those who do act as carers for family members are often left without respite and can feel physically and emotionally overstretched, with growing “resentment” and “isolation”.
